Renewable & Alternative Energy Sources

Renewable energy refers to electricity supplied from renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar power, geothermal, hydropower, and various forms of biomass. These energy sources are considered renewable because they are naturally occurring and theoretically inexhaustible sources.

Alternative energy refers to resources and technologies that may not be mature, widely utilized or (potentially) cost effective.  Additionally, alternative energy and renewable energy are sometimes interchangeable and are defined as technologies that are often designed to supplement or supplant a conventional energy resource, providing the same service in a different way such as using ethanol to replace petroleum-based gasoline.
