Strategies for Waste Reduction of Construction & Demolition (C&D) Debris: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

This U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report is aimed at several audiences including local governments that want to encourage more building-related construction and demolition debris recovery.  It features construction & demolition waste diversion strategies used by successful projects under the Waste Reduction Setters Project. The cases are intended to serve as models for others seeking to implement their own waste reduction program.

The report provides general information about what materials can be recovered, how they can be recovered, and provides model projects with costs, square footage, and percent of waste diverted.  This is a good summary document for municipalities that are new to construction and demolition waste diversion programs. It can also be used as an educational tool for contractors that are being asked to divert their waste for code requirements or to meet specific benchmarks for LEED certification.

The disposal of waste other than through incineration or the use of landfills. Examples include reuse and recycling.Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a building rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to measure energy efficiency. It provides a standard for environmentally sustainable construction.
