Prepared by Sam Zimbabwe of the Center for Transit Oriented Design, this document sets out the “what and why” of transit-oriented development (TOD), including implementation challenges and success stories.
This report provides valuable insight into what makes up a TOD. The analysis suggests that TODs are defined by their provisions for housing choices, mixed use, walkable streets, travel options, public spaces and community engagement. It suggests that by 2030 up to one third of the American housing market will be people who desire to be in walkable or transit-enabled areas. Finally, it concludes that realizing future TOD success will require reforming local zoning, using public funding, making strategic location decisions and engaging the stakeholders.
There are many aspects of successful TOD and this report covers them in great detail and description. This report accurately depicts the many layers of implementation that must be successfully navigated to ensure that these concepts are put into action.
