Workforce Development and the New Apollo Program

Workforce Development and the New Apollo Program

This report is a summary The New Apollo Program, a 10-year, $500 billion investment plan that aims to create 5 million green-collar jobs improving energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy, and rebuilding domestic manufacturing. The Apollo Alliance, a national coalition of business, labor, environmental and community leaders, developed this plan to ensure that federal and state investments in the green economy are linked with opportunities for training and employment for un- and under-employed Americans.

The New Apollo Program provides a brief definition and description of jobs in the green economy, and provides a series of recommendations and case-studies about:

  • Linking economic and workforce development efforts
  • Developing workforce training partnerships
  • Establishing green career pathways
  • Guaranteeing access to disadvantaged communities
  • Potential funding for green workforce development
Finally, the report provides a schematic overview of the Apollo Alliance’s framework for green workforce development. It’s value lies in the many case-studies it provides of best practices in the areas described above. Contact information is provided, and local sustainability and economic development staff will be able to further explore whether these strategies may be relevant for the communities they serve.
