The Dollars and Sense of Green Retrofits

This document summarizes a 2008 Deloitte survey of green retrofit activities within businesses. It identifies key factors in determing the success of a retrofit program and documents the significant impact of buildings on greenhouse gas emissions, as well as, the competitive benefits for companies investing in a “green workplace.”

The report is broken into several brief sections:

  • Motives for green retrofits
  • Perceived benefits of green retrofits
  • Assessment of the cost premium for green retrofits
  • Larger national trends regarding green retrofits
  • Impact on talent attraction and retention
While this report does quote from a wide range of recent research on green retrofits, many of the findings stem from a fairly small survey performed by Deloitte & Touche (16 property owners). The small scale of the survey may limit the benefit of the article, although some of the national data could be helpful to sustainability or economic development staff working to create support for a local green retrofit program.

Any change to an existing facility, such as the adjustment, connection, or disconnection of equipment.Greenhouse gases are a part of the Earth's atmosphere and are both naturally occurring and the result of human chemical processes. The most common greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and chlorofluourocarbons. These gases trap heat and thus contribute to the warming of the planet.
