Extended Producer Responsibility: A Materials Policy for the 21st Century

This lengthy report, published by INFORM, Inc., was prepared on the occasion of Expo 2000, the international exposition held in Hannover, Germany, from June 1 to October 31, 2000. It was first presented at the Resources Summit conference in Berlin on May 18, 2000.

The report has four sections, each written by a different author, which address topics including:

  • The EPR Policy Challenge for the United States (Waste and Recycling in the United States, Government Waste Policies, “Voluntary” Industry EPR Initiatives, Prospects for EPR in the United States)
  • The Internet and E-commerce: A New Imperative for EPR
  • Sustainability and Enterprise: An Inside View of the Corporation
Although written a decade ago, this report provides invaluable information on global trends, policy history and some of the early adopters of EPR programs. Section 2 provides a very good overview of early EPR practice, including some case studies. Although some of the language is a bit technical, the report should be accessible to a general audience and is a useful reference to government staff seeking to deepen their understanding of the topic.

The collection, reprocessing, marketing, and use of materials that were diverted or recovered from the solid waste stream.
