Benefits & Barriers to Electronic Waste Collection Models

This chart explains the benefits and barriers to implementing five different collection models for electronic and appliance waste. It covers programmatic trade-offs such as cost versus convenience, staffing requirements, population coverage, and community appropriateness.

This basic chart is a good reference for the novice program planner and can help to ensure that a city has not overlooked any collection options and that their final choice is a good fit for local conditions. For a more detailed discussion of the various collection models, see the California Integrated Waste Management Board’s 2004 report “Best Management Practices For Electronic Waste," from which this table is taken.
