Best Management Practices for Golf Course Water Use

Best Management Practices for Golf Course Water Use

Over the past several years there has been a growing awareness of water quality and consumption issues as they relate to the golfing industry. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection has developed a manual focused on water conservation and water quality protection for the industry.

"Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Golf Course Water Use" is intended to promote smart techniques for water conservation, water usage and reuse, preservation of water quality water treatment in addition to the protection of water resources. The manual is broken down into four categories:

  • Water Quantity Management: Supply Management
  • Water Quantity Management: Distribution System
  • Water Quantity Management: Construction and Demand Management
  • Water Quality Management and Protection

In addition, the manual addresses “Supply management” and “Demand management” to include conservation measures and methods. This guide is a great example of a holistic approach to an amenity. It looks at the existing natural resources and promotes the design, installation, operation of maintenance of BMPs that not only provide for water quality and quantity treatment, but also for water conservation and protection.

As users review this document, please note that not all of the BMPs will be applicable to your area of the country based on soil, rainfall and climate differences. This is especially true with the design of stormwater quality BMPs.  Please refer to your State’s Stormwater Design Manual for region specific BMPs.
