SCI is rolling out the Pilot City Program to demonstrate the real challenges and successes faced by cities as they develop new sustainability programs and policies. Launched in early 2010, the SCI Pilot City Program is beginning with the selection of two pilot cities -- Charleston, SC and Fayetteville, AR. These two cities were chosen through a competitive, multi-level selection process and site visit. Each city was required to have a sustainability plan and was asked to propose an initiative and project that directly correlated to the objectives and goals set forth in their sustainability plan. The initiative was defined as a component or indicator of the plan and was more broad-based than the project. The project needed to be something implementable and was typically proposed as a "sticks and bricks" project.

Each Pilot City class will be supported for three years with on-going technical assistance from partners, $500,000 in funding from The Home Depot Foundation (over two years) and an additional local coordinator to help bridge the capacity building gap. In exchange, the two pilot cities will share their experiences, good and bad, within The City Program pages of the website.
