Sustainable Building Ordinance: Site Components

This outline will provide a sound foundation on which policymakers may assemble a relevant local ordinance, and it allows for the quick identification of areas for investigation and inclusion.
The process utilizes an integrated approach to the creation of a sustainable building ordinance. It conveys ownership to and accountability from community stakeholders through emphases on building consensus among affected parties. Significant leadership will still be required to review, identify, and to craft a strong ordinance and to secure its passage.
Specifically, the site selection component of the ordinance should be subject to parameters set to protect open space, agricultural land, wetlands, and watersheds. It should encourage dense development where possible in order to reduce the adverse environmental impact of a building project.
