Model Outdoor Lighting Ordinance for Cities and Towns

Unnecessary outdoor lighting is costly both in terms of energy consumed and dollars spent on wasted energy.


This model ordinance provides sample text that cities and towns can use to restrict the areas in which certain types of outdoor lighting fixtures can be used, and to limit the total permitted illumination of lots.

Users can easily replace the word “Anytown” which the name of their local jurisdiction, and other relevant terms (such as Town Meeting, building official, Board of Selectmen, etc.) may also need to be changed to reflect local conditions.
