Choosing the Best Vehicle

Choosing the Best Vehicle
When managing a fleet, organizations should choose the most appropriate vehicle for the task at hand. This practice, called logistic equipment optimization, can conserve energy and resources and reduce the cost of operating a fleet.

RATIONALE

Choosing the best vehicle for a given task can save money and conserve energy and resources. For example, UPS chooses to use rail transportation whenever time permits as it is more efficient than ground and air transportation. UPS also uses hybrid technology for deliveries that require multiple stops because energy can be recovered by these vehicles during braking events.

EFFORT REQUIRED

Equipment optimization can be technology-, skill- and capital-intensive.

BENEFITS

Using the correct technology for a given application can save energy and reduce fleet operating costs.

RISKS

Using a new vehicle technologies may have unforeseen associated costs.

ACTION AGENTS

Due to the effort and expense required for equipment optimization, an organization should initiate a pilot program at the highest levels.

COSTS

Costs of equipment and analysis tools can be high.
