WaterSense®, a partnership program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It seeks to protect the future of our nation's water supply by promoting water efficiency and enhancing the market for water-efficient products, programs, and practices.
Generally speaking, WaterSense labeled products will be about 20 percent more water efficient than less efficient counterparts in the same category. In addition, WaterSense labeled products perform their intended function as well as or better than less efficient counterparts. These products will perform well, help save money, and encourage innovation in manufacturing.
RATIONALE
The growing American population is putting stress on available water supplies. Between 1950 and 2000, the U.S. population nearly doubled. In that same period, public demand for water more than tripled. Americans now use an average of 100 gallons of water each day—enough to fill 1,600 drinking glasses. This increased demand has put additional stress on water supplies and distribution systems, threatening both human health and the environment.
Water conservation has become a national priority. A recent government survey showed at least 36 states anticipate local, regional, or statewide water shortages by 2013. Adopting water efficiency methods will help preserve water supplies for future generations, save money, and protect the environment. WaterSense is making it easier to identify water-efficient products and practices.
EFFORT REQUIRED
Little effort is required. The majority of high efficiency fixtures are installed using the same techniques as older, less efficient models. Plumbers are capable and familiar with installing newer, high efficiency, WaterSense labeled fixtures.
BENEFITS
Decreased water consumption reduces your water bill and may reduce your energy bill because less hot water is used. Community-wide, less water used means water conservation results on a significant level.
RISKS
Any time a water distribution system is disrupted, there is a potential for a leak. Whenever retrofitting any existing fixture or appliance, it is important to thoroughly inspect for water leaks, especially at joints and couplings.
Decreased water flow may affect the performance of the high efficiency fixture or appliance. In critical areas, it is important to test the functionality of the selected fixture or appliance before mass implementation. WaterSense labeled products are tested to ensure efficiency and functionality.
ACTION AGENT(S)
Licensed plumbers facilitate the upgrade to high efficiency, WaterSense labeled water fixtures. In the case of renters, building management will need to approve any plumbing retrofits.
COSTS
There is a negligible cost difference between a high efficiency water fixture and its standard counterpart.
Any change to an existing facility, such as the adjustment, connection, or disconnection of equipment. The ability or potential of a physical body to do work. The most common forms of energy are heat, light, mechanical (moving parts), and electrical.
