Sustainable Affordable Housing Defined

This overview provides a definition of sustainable affordable housing as compared to traditional affordable housing. Affordable housing is typically defined in socioeconomic terms reflecting the percentage of one's income required to obtain and maintain housing. The National Low Income Housing Coalition states a maximum of 30% of a family's income should be dedicated to housing for it to be considered affordable. Another possible way of looking at affordable housing is to consider a contextual real estate market and whether or not people living in relative poverty, typically less than 60% of the median average income for the area under consideration, can afford to secure and maintain housing in that market.
This overview definition will serve to establish a clearly defined context regarding affordable housing.
