Business Category Waste Characterization

Business Category Waste Characterization

A business category waste characterization study is similar to that of a general municipal solid waste characterization study, but the focus is on waste discarded by individual businesses.  This type of data can potentially be applied to similar businesses across an industry once the typical waste composition is known. The data can subsequently be combined with local demographic information in a particular jurisdiction to estimate the qualities of their waste stream.

RATIONALE

Understanding what materials are found in the waste streams of different types of businesses can help a city target specific material sources in their MSW. Cities can then work with local industry to help them reduce waste, recycle more, and save money.

EFFORT REQUIRED

For a simple analysis, there are existing studies that cities can use to model their commercial waste stream according to the make-up of their local industries. To perform a local study would generate more accurate data, but would require a great deal more time and effort.

BENEFITS

  • Reduce landfill waste
  • Save money for industry and local government

RISKS

  •  Existing studies do not match local conditions

COST

This type of data can be expensive and time-consuming to collect for a single company or jurisdiction, but if the cost is spread across a region or industry, then it becomes very cost effective assuming the results can be broadly applied.

The collection, reprocessing, marketing, and use of materials that were diverted or recovered from the solid waste stream. The overall flow of waste from consumers to a landfill, incinerator, or other disposal site.
