Local Governments "Green Jobs Pledge"

Local Governments

The “Green Jobs Pledge” is a national initiative coordinated by Green for All, the Center for American Progress, the Apollo Alliance and ICLEI — Local Governments for Sustainability. The pledge challenges mayors from around the country to publicly commit to a range of actions that support the development of green collar jobs in their communities.

Signatory mayors pledge to a range of actions that support the development of green-collar jobs in their communities, including:

  • Publicly committing to a green-collar jobs strategy
  • Creating a green-collar jobs taskforce
  • Identifying green-collar goals and assessing existing local opportunities
  • Creating a local action plan
  • Developing an evaluation framework to measure success
  • Building a broad-based coalition to enhance public support and develop new resources
The pledge represents an important first step in the development of a green jobs strategy — public commitment and leadership. It is an easy way to get public attention on a critical issue, and provides a good framework for a long-term process. Signing the pledge also provides access to a larger network of peer cities working on similar issues, and the document itself identifies websites and direct contact information that will be useful for local staff tasked with putting this commitment into action.
