Traffic Calming: Sunnyvale, CA

Traffic Calming: Sunnyvale, CA

This case study outline the traffic calming measures that were completed on a particular street in Sunnyvale, California.  Sunnyvale, CA is a Silicon Valley city with a resident population of 130,000 and an additional 104,000 daily commuters.

This case study describes the planning and implementation of traffic calming measures along Canary Drive, in south Sunnyvale. The city determined that the most appropriate measures would be additional speed limit signs, increased enforcement by police, a periodic radar speed detector and installing a double yellow stripe. Sunnyvale surveyed citizens to find out if they would respond favorably to these changes. The city implemented the plan, and this documents sets forth the lessons learned in the four years since completion.

The report is comprehensive and looks at the entire traffic calming process.  In addition, it uses a slideshow format that is visually appealing to viewers. The "Lessons Learned" slide at the end is especially pertinent.

Traffic calming measures promote many aspects of a healthy community, including livability, reduced traffic, lower speeds, more pedestrian and bicycle access and safer streets. Environmentally, traffic calming supports sustainability in cities by encouraging alternative, non-polluting methods of transportation and promoting tree planting along roadways.
