Getting the Most from the Greenline: Somerville, MA

Sam Zimbabwe of Reconnecting America/Center for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), Monica Lamboy from the Mayor's Office in the City of Somerville, Massachusetts, and Meridith Levy of Somerville Community Corporation participated in a panel during the Build Boston 2008 convention. This PowerPoint presentation was used by all three participants to discuss the benefits of transit-oriented development (TOD) and the plans for TOD in Somerville.
In PowerPoint form, this case study discusses the benefits of TOD from the transit, community and city perspectives. It discusses the demand for transit and the importance of maintaining economic and racial diversity in neighborhoods near transit. The study also discusses plans, including timelines, for TOD in Somerville plans.
The case study provides a good introduction to the benefits and risks of TOD. The plan also provides an overview of Somerville’s plan for TOD. Readers interested in developing TOD in their communities may benefit from this case study. However, because the case study is developed for Somerville, some aspects of the plan will not apply elsewhere.
