Reconnecting Fort Wayne: Car Sharing

Reconnecting Fort Wayne: Car Sharing

This report examines the potential for carsharing in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and outlines strategies for the creation of a carsharing organization. It concludes that carsharing will be most successful if there is a large institutional player, such as the city government, involved.

Transportation is the single largest source of human-made greenhouse gases. Carsharing helps reduce the negative environmental impacts of heavy auto use. Moreover, carsharing can help significantly reduce household transportation costs and traffic congestion.

Carsharing encourages and supports walkable communities and transit. It shares the cost of car ownership and maintenance across many users. Carshare vehicles are typically energy efficient, keeping CO2 emissions to a minimum.

Greenhouse gases are a part of the Earth's atmosphere and are both naturally occurring and the result of human chemical processes. The most common greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and chlorofluourocarbons. These gases trap heat and thus contribute to the warming of the planet.
