Green Infrastructure: NYC plans on using green roofs to curb water runoff

Shan Arora ● October 01, 2010, 09:14 PM UTC

Reuters reports that Mayor Bloomberg has proposed that New York City buildings install rooftop catchment systems (for temporarily storing rainwater) or green roofs as part of the City's PlaNYC, which calls for making 90% of the City's waterways suitable for recreation. Reuters further reports that if the state does not accept the Mayor's proposal, NYC will have to spend $6.8 billion to prevent its treatment plants from getting flooded and discharging sewage during heavy rains. The Mayor claims that his green infrastructure proposal will cost less (save $2.4 billion over 20 years).

And as an added bonus the green roofs reduce ac costs in the summer. Studies have shown that green roofs dramatically reduce the heat island effect of our concrete and steel jungles.

hi, I have been new to this,

can someone help me out with what courses are available for green roofing ?

or some sites where i can get this things in detail.

I can recommend several resources for information regrading training and accreditation for those interested in the green roofing industry.

www.greenroofs.net/ is the website for Green Roofs For Healthy Cities. GRHC is the non-profit partner to the green roof industry. They offer courses on green roof design, installation and management and offer the only green roof certification I am aware of the Certified Greenroof Professional credential (GRP).

Another resource is www.greenroofs.com they offer a database of projects and professionals listed by city and are a great resource for general information on green roofing.

Finally, the Green Infrastructure Foundation www.greeninfrastructurefoundation.org works to promote green infrastructure technologies and strategies appropriate for cities.
